What Is Gajkesari Yoga?

Gajkesari Yoga (also written Gaja Kesari Yoga) is one of the best-known and most auspicious yogas in Vedic astrology. Its name joins two powerful animals – Gaja, the elephant, a symbol of wisdom, prosperity and dignity, and Kesari, the lion, a symbol of courage and authority. A person born with a strong Gajkesari Yoga is believed to combine both: the intelligence and grace of the elephant with the confidence and leadership of the lion.

How Gajkesari Yoga Is Formed

The yoga is formed when Jupiter (Guru) is in a Kendra – the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house – counted from the Moon (Chandra). Many astrologers also consider the yoga when Jupiter is in a Kendra from the Ascendant (Lagna), but the classical rule is counted from the Moon.

Example: if the Moon is in Taurus and Jupiter is in Leo, Leo is the 4th sign from Taurus, so Gajkesari Yoga is formed. It would also be formed with Jupiter in Taurus itself (1st), in Scorpio (7th) or in Aquarius (10th).

Because Jupiter stays in one sign for about a year while the Moon changes sign every two and a half days, the Moon is in a Kendra from Jupiter roughly one-third of the time. That means the yoga, in some form, appears in about one in three birth charts – which is why its strength matters far more than its mere presence.

What Makes It Strong

  • Jupiter is strong by sign – in its own signs Sagittarius or Pisces, or exalted in Cancer.
  • The Moon is bright and strong – waxing (Shukla Paksha) and not debilitated in Scorpio.
  • Jupiter and the Moon are free from the influence of malefic planets such as Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.
  • Jupiter is not combust (too close to the Sun) or retrograde in a weak sign.
  • The yoga also involves the Ascendant or occurs in a Kendra from the Ascendant, so that it touches the native’s life directly.

What Weakens or Cancels It

  • Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn, or the Moon is debilitated in Scorpio, without cancellation (Neech Bhang).
  • Jupiter or the Moon is combust, or placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house from the Ascendant.
  • Jupiter is joined or aspected by Rahu (forming Guru Chandal Yoga) or by Saturn.
  • The Moon is very weak – close to the new moon – or isolated, as in Kemdrum Yoga.

A weakened Gajkesari Yoga still gives some of its good results, but they come later in life, more slowly, or only during the periods of Jupiter and the Moon.

Effects of Gajkesari Yoga

Classical texts describe the native of a strong Gajkesari Yoga as intelligent, eloquent, virtuous, wealthy, respected and long-lived, able to overcome rivals and to earn lasting fame. In practical terms it is linked with:

  • Wisdom and learning – a sharp mind, good judgement and success in education.
  • Wealth and comfort – steady prosperity, property and the comforts of life.
  • Reputation – respect in society and a good name that lasts.
  • Leadership and speech – persuasive communication, skill in debate, teaching, law, administration or the arts.
  • Generosity – a kind, religious or charitable nature and loyal friends.

Results by Jupiter’s House From the Moon

  • 1st (Jupiter with the Moon) – an optimistic, charismatic personality and good health.
  • 4th – happiness at home, property, vehicles, a good education and support from the mother.
  • 7th – a respected spouse, happy marriage and success in partnerships and public dealings.
  • 10th – high status in career, recognition and authority at work.

The yoga gives its fullest results during the Mahadasha or Antardasha of Jupiter or the Moon.

Remedies to Strengthen Gajkesari Yoga

  • Worship Lord Vishnu or Brihaspati (Guru) on Thursdays, and fast or eat simple food that day if you can.
  • Chant the Guru mantra “Om Gram Greem Groum Sah Gurave Namah” 108 times, especially on Thursdays.
  • Respect teachers, elders and spiritual guides, and support education – Jupiter is the teacher among the planets.
  • Donate yellow items such as turmeric, chana dal, bananas or yellow clothes on Thursdays.
  • Wear Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) only after an astrologer has checked your chart – a gemstone that strengthens the wrong planet can do more harm than good.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gajkesari Yoga rare?
No – Jupiter is in a Kendra from the Moon in roughly one-third of all charts. What is rare is a strong, unafflicted Gajkesari Yoga, and that is what gives remarkable results.

Does Gajkesari Yoga guarantee wealth and fame?
No single yoga decides a whole life. Its results depend on the strength of Jupiter and the Moon, the houses involved, the rest of the chart and the running Dasha.
