What is a Yoga?
The word yoga means union. In astrology it describes a specific relationship between planets — by sign, house, conjunction or aspect — that produces a particular result. There are hundreds of yogas in the classical texts; the most important include the Raj Yogas, the Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas and the Parivartana (exchange) Yogas.
A yoga shows potential; when it gives results is usually decided by the dasha of the planets forming it. The strength of those planets, and any affliction to them, decides how fully it delivers.
Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas
Formed when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn is in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra.
Raj Yogas and Wealth Yogas
Combinations for power, status, fortune and prosperity.
Moon and Sun Yogas
Yogas formed by planets around the Moon or the Sun.
Challenging Yogas
Combinations that point to difficulties, and the remedies that help.
Auspicious and Inauspicious Yogas
Auspicious yogas indicate prosperity, success and happiness, while inauspicious yogas point to obstacles in health, wealth or relationships. If you have a strong Raj Yoga or Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga but it is not giving full results, look at the planet forming it — strengthening that planet through appropriate remedies can help.
Note that in the Panchang (the Hindu almanac), yoga also refers to one of 27 divisions of time based on the combined longitudes of the Sun and Moon — a different concept from the chart yogas listed here.
