What the Ascendant Means
The Ascendant (Lagna) becomes the 1st house of the horoscope, and every other house is counted from it. It describes your body, appearance, temperament, health and general direction in life — many astrologers consider it at least as important as the Sun and the Moon.
Because a new sign rises roughly every two hours, the Ascendant depends on an accurate birth time and place. Two people born on the same day in the same city can have different Ascendants.
Lagna Lords and Yogakarakas
The planet ruling the Ascendant sign is the Lagna lord. Some Ascendants also have a Yogakaraka — a planet that rules both a Kendra and a Trikona and is especially favourable for that Lagna.
