Hast Samudrika Shastra the Indian Science of Hands

Hast Samudrika Shastra is the Indian system of palmistry. It is part of Samudrika Shastra, the ancient study of the human body's features and what they reveal.

A broad approach

Indian palmistry looks at the whole hand: its colour, warmth, softness, shape, fingers, nails, mounts, lines and special signs. It is closely linked with Vedic astrology, with each mount connected to a planet.

Auspicious signs

Indian texts give special importance to signs such as the fish (matsya), lotus (padma), conch (shankh), trident (trishul), flag, temple and swastik on the palm. These are linked with wealth, wisdom, fame and spiritual merit.

Palm and planets

  • Index finger and its mount: Jupiter (Guru)
  • Middle finger: Saturn (Shani)
  • Ring finger: Sun (Surya)
  • Little finger: Mercury (Budh)
  • Base of the thumb: Venus (Shukra)
  • Outer lower palm: Moon (Chandra)
  • Middle areas: Mars (Mangal), Rahu and Ketu

Purpose

The aim of Hast Samudrika Shastra is to understand nature and tendencies so a person can make wise choices and strengthen weak areas, often through astrological remedies.
