Thumb Shape and Willpower

In palmistry, the thumb is so important that some say it alone can reveal character. It represents willpower, logic and love.

Three parts of the thumb

  • Top phalange (tip): willpower and determination.
  • Middle phalange: logic and reasoning.
  • Base (mount of Venus): love, vitality and passion.

Thumb length

  • Long thumb (reaching above the middle of the index finger's lower section): strong will, leadership and independence.
  • Short thumb: more emotional, easily influenced, guided by the heart.

Thumb shape

  • Thick, broad tip: forceful, determined, sometimes stubborn.
  • Slim, refined tip: tactful and diplomatic.
  • Waisted middle section: tact and good judgement.

A balanced thumb, where will and logic are of similar length, shows someone who thinks before acting.
