Why Vaastu Matters
The rules of Vastu are founded on the laws of nature, and its importance and balance can be seen in the way vehicles,
aeroplanes and trains are engineered to move. Buses, for example, are so precisely balanced that even a defect in one tyre
can cause a terrible accident at high speed. In the same way, when a house is built without regard for the principles of
Vastu, it can invite problems and accidents.
The word Vastu comes from Sanskrit and means “Bhu”, the fundamental substance of existence. Where the sun's
energy is concerned, the eastern and western sides of a house are important, while the significance of the northern and
southern sides comes from the path of the magnetic waves that flow from the north pole to the south pole. For this reason,
the southern portion of every house should be higher than the northern portion.
In earlier times, homes were generally built according to Vastu, and people lived happily as a result. Over time many of
these traditions have been set aside, and the rules of Vastu have been ignored along with them. Vastu's logic and its
effects are timeless: its purpose is to make people's lives happier and free of trouble. Because it is based on the
properties of the sun and the earth, it applies equally to people of every faith and community.
If you build a house according to Vastu guidelines, you may lead a prosperous, happy and healthy life.
The Five Elements in Vaastu
Earth
It is very important to choose the right land. You should also consider the surrounding environment and the accessibility of water.
Water
Water should be drained toward the north-eastern side. Tube wells, pools and similar features should also be placed in the
north-east, which is considered auspicious and suitable for water. Septic tanks should be located in the north-west, and
rainwater should be allowed to flow toward the north-east.
Fire
The south-eastern side is ideal for fire. The kitchen, fireplace and similar features should be located on this side. The
north-west may be used as an alternative when needed.
Air
Air should enter from the north-eastern part of the house. All openings meant for ventilation should face this direction.
Space
Open space plays a major role in Vastu, since it allows the earth's natural energies to act freely, whereas a building
can obstruct them. This is why lawns and open courtyards are considered so important. Traditionally, every home in India had
an open space at its centre, which gave plenty of sunlight and ventilation.
