Photos of Ancestors Where to Place

Honouring ancestors is an important part of Indian tradition. Vaastu gives guidance on where to place photographs of family members who have passed away.

Best direction

Place ancestors' photos on the south or south-west wall, so that they face north or north-east. The south is linked with the Pitris (ancestors) and with Yama.

Where not to place them

  • In the pooja room alongside deities.
  • In the bedroom.
  • In the kitchen.
  • Directly facing the main door or in the centre of the house.
  • On the north-east wall.

How to display them

  • Do not hang them too high; a small table or a low shelf is better.
  • Keep only a few photos rather than many.
  • Avoid hanging them next to photos of living family members.
  • Keep the photos clean, and offer a lamp or flowers on anniversaries and during Pitru Paksha.

Respect and remembrance

The purpose is to remember and honour ancestors with love, without creating sadness in the home. A calm, respectful place supports the blessings of the elders.
