Best directions
The south, west and south-west are the best zones for a staircase, as heavy structures belong there. Avoid the north-east and the centre of the house.
Direction of climbing
- Stairs should turn clockwise when climbing.
- Climb from north to south or east to west.
- Avoid spiral staircases where possible.
Number of steps
Vaastu recommends an odd number of steps, such as 9, 11, 15 or 21, and avoids totals ending in zero. The idea is that you start climbing with the right foot and also step onto the upper floor with the right foot, which is considered auspicious.
Under the staircase
- Do not use the space under the stairs for a pooja room, kitchen or toilet.
- Use it for storage of light, non-valuable items.
- Keep it clean and well lit.
Other tips
- Stairs should not start or end directly facing the main door.
- Use light colours on the walls of the staircase.
- Repair broken steps and railings quickly.
