Good shapes
- Square: the best shape, balanced in all directions.
- Rectangle: very good, especially when the longer side runs north-south or east-west and the ratio stays within 1:2.
- Gaumukhi (cow-faced): narrow at the front and wider at the back; considered good for homes.
Shapes to avoid
- Shermukhi (lion-faced): wide at the front and narrow at the back; good for commercial use but less suited to homes.
- Triangular: linked with conflict and instability.
- Circular or oval: difficult to plan by Vaastu.
- Irregular with many cuts: each missing corner weakens its direction.
Extensions and cuts
An extension in the north-east is considered good, while extensions in other corners, and cuts in the north-east, are less favourable.
Fixing an irregular plot
If a plot is irregular, a compound wall can be used to create a square or rectangular usable area, with the extra land used as a garden or left open.
