The pit test
Dig a pit about one foot deep and wide, then refill it with the same soil. If soil is left over, the land is considered excellent. If the pit fills exactly, it is average. If it falls short, the land is considered weak.
The water test
Fill the pit with water in the evening and check it in the morning. If some water remains, the soil is good. If the pit is dry and cracked, the soil is considered unsuitable without treatment.
Colour and smell
- White, red, yellow and black soils were traditionally linked with different uses and communities.
- Soil with a pleasant smell is considered good.
- Avoid land with bones, ash, hair, worms or debris buried in it; remove such material before building.
Combine with modern testing
Always do a proper soil test by an engineer for safe foundations. Vaastu checks can be done alongside for peace of mind.
