Best directions
Balconies in the north, east and north-east are the most beneficial, as they let in morning sunlight and fresh energy. Balconies in the south-west are least preferred.
What to keep
- Light furniture such as cane or wooden chairs.
- Small flowering plants and tulsi in the north or east.
- Wind chimes in the north-west or west.
- Soft lighting for the evening.
What to avoid
- Heavy pots and large planters in the north-east.
- Storing junk, broken furniture or old items.
- Drying clothes in the north-east for long periods.
- Thorny plants like cactus.
Balcony in the south or west
Keep it partly covered, use heavier plants and furniture, and add curtains or screens to soften the strong afternoon sun.
Floor slope
The balcony floor should slope gently towards the north or east so that water drains in that direction.
