A basement is best under the north, east or north-east portion of the building. Avoid a basement under the south, west or south-west, which should remain heavy and raised.

- Paint the basement in white, cream or other light colours.
- Keep it clean, dry and free of dampness.
- Use it for parking, storage, a gym or a home theatre.
Don'ts
- Avoid using the basement as a bedroom or a living space for long hours.
- Do not store junk or broken items there.
- Avoid a basement under the entire house if possible.
- Do not place the basement entrance in the south-west.
