Choosing the date
Choose an auspicious muhurat based on the owner's horoscope and the Panchang. Avoid Kharmas, eclipses and inauspicious periods. Use our Muhurat Finder to see good dates.
Where to start
Begin digging in the north-east corner. When laying the foundation, start from the south-west, as it should be the strongest and first-built part.
The ritual
- Worship Lord Ganesha, Vaastu Purusha and Mother Earth.
- Offer a silver or copper snake (naag) and a kalash in the foundation pit.
- Perform the puja facing east or north.
- Distribute sweets to workers and neighbours.
During construction
- Store materials in the south-west.
- Keep the north-east clean and open.
- Complete construction without long breaks where possible.
