Vaastu Guide

The Eight Directions and Their Ruling Deities

In Vaastu every direction is guarded by a deity and linked with a planet. Knowing these rulers helps you understand why each part of a home is used for a particular purpose.

The four main directions

  • North (Uttara): ruled by Kubera, the god of wealth, and the planet Mercury. Keep it open and light to invite money and opportunities.
  • East (Purva): ruled by Indra and linked with the Sun. It brings health, growth and social respect. Large windows and an east entrance are ideal.
  • South (Dakshina): ruled by Yama and the planet Mars. Heavier walls and fewer openings here give strength and protection.
  • West (Paschima): ruled by Varuna, the god of water and rain, and the planet Saturn. Good for the dining room, children's room and study.

The four corners

  • North-east (Ishanya): ruled by Lord Shiva (Ishana) and Jupiter. The most sacred corner, ideal for prayer and meditation.
  • South-east (Agneya): ruled by Agni, the fire god, and Venus. The natural place for the kitchen.
  • South-west (Nairutya): ruled by Nirriti and Rahu. Best for the master bedroom and heavy storage.
  • North-west (Vayavya): ruled by Vayu, the wind god, and the Moon. Suits guest rooms, the store for grains and parking.

The centre

The centre belongs to Lord Brahma, the creator. It should be left open so that energy can move freely through the whole house.

Using this knowledge

When you plan a room, ask which deity rules that direction and whether the activity suits that energy. Prayer in the realm of Shiva, cooking in the realm of Agni and rest in the stable south-west make natural sense.
