Vaastu Shastra Basics for Beginners

Vaastu Shastra is the ancient Indian science of designing buildings in harmony with nature. It explains how the directions, the five elements and the flow of sunlight and air affect the people who live in a space.

What Vaastu really means

The word Vaastu comes from vastu, meaning a dwelling or a thing that exists, and shastra means a body of knowledge. Classical texts such as the Mayamatam, Manasara and Vishwakarma Prakash describe how temples, palaces and homes were planned so that natural energy supports health, wealth and peace.

The three core ideas

  • Directions: each of the eight directions has its own ruling deity, planet and quality. North brings wealth, east brings health and growth, south-west brings stability.
  • Five elements: earth, water, fire, air and space must be placed in their natural zones — water in the north-east, fire in the south-east, earth in the south-west, air in the north-west and open space at the centre.
  • Balance: a home works best when no zone is heavily cut, blocked or misused, for example a toilet in the north-east or a kitchen in the north.

Simple rules every beginner can follow

  • Keep the north-east corner clean, light and clutter-free.
  • Place heavy furniture and the master bedroom in the south-west.
  • Cook in the south-east while facing east.
  • Sleep with your head towards the south or east.
  • Keep the centre of the house (Brahmasthan) open and uncluttered.

Vaastu is about flow, not fear

Vaastu is not meant to frighten anyone. Most homes have a few imperfections, and many can be balanced with simple changes in furniture, colours, lighting and daily habits. Start with small steps, observe how you feel in your home, and use a free Vaastu assessment to understand your own house.
