How the padas work
Stand outside your house and look at the wall with the main door. Divide that wall into eight equal parts. Numbering starts from the corner on your right when you face the house for the north and east sides, following the traditional order. The pada where your door falls decides its effect.
Most auspicious padas
- North side: the padas of Mukhya, Bhallat and Soma (N3, N4, N5) are linked with wealth and success. Soma, ruled by Kubera, is especially favourable.
- East side: Jayanta, Mahendra and Surya (E3, E4) bring fame, government favour and growth.
- South side: Vitatha and Grihakshat (S3, S4) are acceptable and bring prosperity.
- West side: Sugreeva and Pushpadanta (W3, W4) are linked with growth and good fortune.
Padas to avoid
Corner padas and some south and west padas are linked with debts, quarrels, illness or theft in classical texts. For example, the south-west padas are usually avoided for main doors.
Why this matters
This is why Vaastu does not simply say "south doors are bad". A south door in a good pada can be excellent, while a north door in a poor pada may disappoint. A Vaastu consultant can measure your entrance and confirm its pada.
