Best direction
The north-west is the best place for a septic tank. If not possible, place it in the west of the north-west or the south of the south-east, away from corners.
Directions to avoid
- North-east: the most serious defect.
- South-west: linked with instability and illness.
- Centre: never place a septic tank at the centre.
- Near the borewell or kitchen.
Construction tips
- The tank should not touch the compound wall; leave a gap of at least one to two feet.
- Its length should run east-west and its width north-south.
- Waste pipes should exit towards the west or north-west.
Maintenance
Clean the tank on time and fix leaks or overflows immediately to avoid health hazards.
