He is the part of famous screenwriter duo Salim-Javed, other half being Javed Akhtar. Salim Khan used to develop the character of the story and Javed Akhtar created the dialogues. He started his career as a minor actor in films like Professor(1962), Teesri Manzil(1966), Chhaila Babu(1967). He switched to screenwriting by partnering with Javed in ventures like Andaz, Adhikar, Seeta Aur Geeta, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Deewaar, Sholay, Trishul, Dostana, Shakti, Zamana, Mr. India.
