Siliguri city is in the Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling districts of the state of West Bengal in India and is also called the Gateway of Northeast India. The city is situated at the base of the eastern Himalayan Mountain Ranges inside the Siliguri Corridor with the River Mahananda flowing through it. Siliguri came into prominence in the Nineteenth Century when this region was overtaken by the Kingdom of Sikkim and then by the Kingdom of Nepal and then by the British rulers with the creation of a port on the banks of the Mahananda River. Hinduism is the main religion of the people of this city with the ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Madhav Sundar Mandir being the most important religious shrine. The economy of Siliguri is dependant mainly on the sale of tea and timber and also on the large influx of tourists going to the nearby hill destinations of North Bengal and Sikkim.
