Pluto, sometimes called Yama or Kuber in Indian astrology, is the slowest and most distant body used by astrologers. It stands for power, transformation, endings and rebirth. Although not one of the nine classical grahas, it is studied by many modern astrologers for deep, long-term change in society and in individual lives.
This page lists every Pluto transit from 1900 to 2100 in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa.
How Pluto moves through the zodiac
- Between 12 and 30 years in a sign: Pluto takes about 248 years to circle the zodiac, and its orbit is so elongated that it passes some signs much faster than others.
- Retrograde for about five to six months a year: it often crosses a sign boundary three or even five times before settling.
- Generational influence: people born over one or two decades share the same Pluto sign.

The dates are calculated by MoonAstro's planetary engine using the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. This planet moves so slowly - sometimes only a few minutes of arc a day - that different ephemerides can place a sign change a few days apart. Treat the dates as a guide to the period, not to the exact day.
How astrologers read a Pluto transit
A Pluto transit over the Moon, Sun or Ascendant is associated with deep, lasting transformation - the end of one chapter and the start of another. Read from the Moon sign:
- Over the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th from the Moon: major turning points in identity, home, relationships or career.
- Over the 3rd, 6th and 11th: increased will power and the ability to overcome long-standing problems.
- Over the 8th and 12th: research, inner work and letting go of what no longer serves you.
Pluto works slowly in the background; your dasha and the classical planets describe day-to-day events. For your current transits, see our free personal Gochar report.
Frequently asked questions
Is Pluto used in Vedic astrology?
Pluto is not one of the nine traditional grahas. Some modern Vedic astrologers use it as an additional indicator of deep, generational change.
How long does Pluto stay in one sign?
Anywhere from about 12 to over 30 years, because its orbit is strongly elliptical.
Why are the Pluto dates approximate?
Pluto moves only a few minutes of arc on many days, and near its stations it hardly moves at all, so small differences between planetary tables can shift a sign change by several days.
