His father was Sardar Malik and uncle was Hasrat Jaipuri. Born on 21 st Jan, 1963 Malik graduated in commerce from Narsee Monjee College, Mumbai. Initially he was interested in acting and did small roles in Mahabharat, Tirangaa, Baazigar and Beta Ho Toh Aisa. But in 2001 he directed his music album, Yeh zindagi ka safar and became famous for Thodasa Pyar Hua Hai.
