Festivals of Assam

Assam is a beautiful state of Northeast India famous for its tea and silk. It is also home to a wide variety of species of flora and fauna. This state is also well-known for the festivals and fairs happening all year round. Bihu is the most important festival of Assam. It is a set of three festivals celebrated at different intervals during the year. Rongali or Bohag Bihu is celebrated in April, Kongali, or Kati Bihu in October, and Bhogali or Magh Bihu in January. It is a harvest festival that is celebrated to mark the shift in the Suns solstice. The term Bihu literally means “to seek blessings and prosperity from Gods” for the harvest season. It is celebrated with extreme joy by all Assamese people irrespective of religion, caste, creed, or belief.
The other famous and widely celebrated festivals of Assam include Me-Dum-Me-Phi, observed by the whole Ahom community of Assam. It is celebrated on the 31st of January every year. Moreover, festivals like Baishagu, a famous festival of Boros, and Ambubachi Mela, a very important festival of Kamakhya Temple are celebrated with extreme grandeur and happiness. The indigenous people of Assam perform various traditional dances and practices on these festivals.
