A Bond Celebrated for Centuries
Being brother and sister means being there for each other. Hindus honour this bond every year on Raksha Bandhan – raksha means “protection” and bandhan means “bond”. The sister ties a sacred rakhi on her brother’s wrist and prays for his wellbeing, and he promises to protect her. On Bhai Dooj sisters again pray for their brothers’ long life and happiness.
There is no equivalent festival for two brothers or two sisters, but their bond is just as precious. Not everyone is blessed with a sibling, and some share a difficult relationship with the one they have. Astrology cannot replace genuine effort, but it can explain the nature of the bond and suggest remedies to improve it.
How Siblings Are Read in the Chart
YoungerThe 3rd house
A strong 3rd house or 3rd lord gives a good relationship with younger siblings. Further younger siblings are traditionally read by counting the 3rd again from the 3rd. An empty 3rd house with no benefic aspect may mean fewer younger siblings, or a bond that needs extra care.
ElderThe 11th house
A strong 11th house or 11th lord indicates supportive elder siblings. When the 11th house is afflicted by malefics such as Saturn or Rahu, there may be no elder sibling, or little support from one in difficult times.
KarakaMars
Mars is the natural significator of siblings – especially brothers. A well-placed Mars, or Mars or Jupiter in the 3rd house, strengthens the bond.
MoonMoon placement
The Moon in the 3rd, 5th, 9th or 11th house usually gives the warmest sibling relationships; in the 6th, 8th or 12th house it tends to bring strain.
